I haven't done one of these in a long time. I just couldn't pass this one up though. Beautiful eyes are pretty standard in our house. My oldest and youngest have huge striking blue eyes. They often take peoples breath away, and for good reason. My middle child is my spunky, crazy one and she has eyes to match. I suppose that they could be called hazel, but the truth of the matter is they really can't decide what color they want to be. They are rich and deep and wonderful, just like the girl they belong too. I think they are some of the most beautiful eyes out there.

Beautiful Little "C"

I love new babies! "C" was a month old when we got together for her pictures. She was awake most of the shoot and I was very impressed by how calm she was. Her mommy and daddy are very lucky to have such a mellow little girl! I hope you are as charmed as I was!

I love this family! They have been clients of mine for a long while now and I feel so lucky to be a part of their lives. I have known both mom and dad since before we all were married and had children. They are remarkable together! Truly what I would call soul mates and it shows in everything they do. Their children are just stunning! It was the girls turn for pictures and you couldn't find two better little models. Little miss "L" was all smiles and cute faces for me! Her big sister, Miss "A", is just beautiful. She has the most amazing eyes and follows direction so well. But my favorites are the ones we caught of just her being herself! This week at I ♥ Faces the challenge is "Sweet Dreams" and I immediately thought of this picture of my oldest. I have lots of sleeping babies from jobs past, but this picture is my favorite. It was taken about a year ago. She kept telling me over and over how she was such a big girl and didn't need a nap anymore. So I told her she didn't have to nap and I went up to put the baby to sleep. I came down the stairs to find her like this:

I LOVE her pouty lips, so much like her father's, and how she was snoring lightly for the whole two hours she slept. These kinds of pictures are why I love photography so much. I have so many memories tied into this one snapshot and, really, isn't that what it is all about?

This week on I ♥ Faces the challenge is Sun Flare. I'm not sure I am any good at these, but I instantly thought of this picture. This little boy is very dear to my heart and the oldest child of one of my closest friends. He has two adorable little sisters as well and I am very lucky in that I get to photograph them regularly. Brock, pictured below, is an amazing boy. His ability to learn and grow through very difficult circumstances has impressed me beyond words. This photo shoot was the first time that he would smile and pose for me. This picture, I think, truly captures his spirit. Brock, you are one awesome little boy and this world is a better place because you are in it!

This weeks challenge was Nostalgia. My brother and I used to spend hours playing all kinds of video games (sometimes we still do). This picture of my daughter totally reminds me of those times. The sheer concentration on her face is what gets me...did we look like that? I guess we must have. Never mind that her guitar wasn't really plugged in and that my brother was the one really playing! :o) She was only 2 after all.

The "B" Kids

I love these children! We have so much fun together! The long and short of how we know each other: There mom used to date my husband. Yup! I am very close with their mom and I have been privileged to watch these kids grow up. So I jumped at the chance to do their portraits again (their birthdays are coming up...they will be 4, 3 and 2!). Beautiful pictures are so easy when the subjects are this adorable!

My Very First Wedding...

I shot my very first wedding yesterday. It was quiet the experience, despite getting a bit too much sun, I think it was a good one. I need to give a big shout out to my best bud Wendhy from Wendhy Jeffers Photography who was my other shooter (no one in their right mind would call her their second shooter!). Wendhy you made yesterday really fun and I am sooooooo glad that you were there. Thanks for your great ideas, wonderful timing and for just being you! Oh and for telling me to take some pain killer before bed...best advice of the night as far as I am concerned!

To the wonderful Hulme family....thanks for being flexible and generally just awesome! To the Malan Family...you guys have a fab house and yard! Thanks for letting everyone take it over and make it perfect for Whitney and Noah!

And for the record, I am not a Wedding Photographer at heart. While I had fun yesterday I don't think I am cut out for it in general. So you friends of mine that have yet to get hitched, if you ask me nicely I will probably do it for you, but you would be better off hiring someone like Wendhy cause not only does she ROCK, she loves the job!

Four Light Portrait Assignment

Cadence was my lucky model for my first Lighting assignment! She did great considering she wasn't feeling very well. She is such a good kid! She didn't get into anything and was very careful around the lights. It was so fun since she is just plain silly most of the time!

There were four lights involved in this assignment: the Key light (main light), the Fill light (to soften the shadows from the Key light), the background light, and a hair light (keeps the hair from getting lost in shadow or the background.

The background is actually just black paper. We draped a blue gel over the light and then metered the background to match our aperture (exposure). That gave us this lovely medium blue. If we had wanted it lighter we could have upped the light coming from the background light or used less light to to get a much darker blue. Very cool thing since it means you can have all kinds of colors without having a million different backdrops. Just a bunch of gels! Totally fun!

More Night Photography

Okay, I have a bunch of assignments to tell you about! First up is star points...This one is really kind of boring cause I haven't been able to take anything better with all the clouds in the sky here in Vegas...but you get the idea. You want the stars to be points so you can only leave the shutter open long enough to get the stars and not the movement of the earth along with it.

Next is Star Trails...these are very cool. The longer you leave your shutter open the longer the trails will be as the earth moves!
The above picture was a 40 minute exposure.
Also a 40 minute exposure.

This was just under an hour. The tight circle is around the north star.

We lit up the trees for a few seconds in this shot (40 minute exposure). The really bright "star" is actually a planet (Venus I think).

This exposure was 2 hours long. All the star shots were taken up at my parent's cabin outside of Paragonah, UT. Had to get away from Vegas so the city lights didn't block out the stars. Wendhy and Ashleigh came with and we had a blast for two nights staying up into the wee hours to get some nice shots!

Next up is painting with light. We did these at the Neon Bone Yard here in Vegas (it was a class field trip). It was awesome. Since Wendhy, Ashleigh, and I worked as a team we were able to use several colored gels at the same time to get some neat effects. The exposures on these were about 40 seconds long.

Basically you walk through your fame with a flashlight and light up the sections you want to appear a certain color. The one above I did on my own (it is the old Sahara sign...there was some awesome stuff in the Bone yard). You can see where I was walking because of the random light flashes from my flash light...because I was moving the whole time I don't appear in the photo. Not enough light on me at any given time!

The old Sliver Slipper and it's sign. Wendhy and Ashleigh lit up the shoe with regular flash lights and I had a red gel on my flash light and lit up the sign behind it.

The Duck was sweet. I was doing yellow, Wendhy was doing orange, and Ashleigh did the blue.
This is one of my favorites! Wendhy was the brave one behind the skull lighting up the mouth, I was doing red on the letters and Ashleigh was lighting up the bottom of the letters with orange. So you have an idea of how big this things is, the letters are about 6 feet tall.

Next up is my student choice assignment. I was going to do Fireworks, but the other night we had lightening and I actually caught some! Because the city lights are so bright I could only do 5 second exposures. I stood out on the sidewalk with my sister, Whitney, and just kept pressing the shutter release button every five seconds for about an hour, only stopping to move the camera angle a bit here and there. This is what I got!

These first ones are exactly how they looked in the camera...very orange from all the city light bouncing off the clouds!

I edited the ones below to look more like it does to the natural eye...

Night Photography

This summer I am taking a Night Photography class and it has been a blast! I am a little behind in updating with my assignments since the class is going so quickly, but I thought I would show you what I have had to turn in so far. Our first Assignment was shooting correctly exposed Neon...I decided to play with my zoom a bit...here is what I got: (note: you need a locking cable release and a "B" or Bulb setting to do most of this stuff at night).

I had some camera shake from my weak tripod (you need a really sturdy one to be doing these longer exposures) and that is why the Always Open part looks wavy. The exposure was 1 second long and all I did was zoom my lens after releasing the shutter.

My next assignment was Traffic Trails...look these up on Google and you can get a really cool look at what you can get if you have the right angles and lots of patience. Here is what I got:

My exposure was somewhere close to 20 seconds...long enough to get the lights, but the car won't show up unless it stops for at least 5 seconds or more.

Next up was one of my favorites so far in class, Moonlight Landscapes. If they are properly exposed, the pictures should look just like sunlight. It is best to take these with a full moon or a Gibbous moon. We had a Gibbous since we couldn't get far enough away from Vegas to take them until the weekend (three days after the full moon). Wendhy and Ashleigh came with (my mom was kind enough to drive us). We drove out to Ivins Utah and didn't get back until 4am but we had a blast! Here is what I got:

This first one was a 16 minute exposure and the moon had just risen. You can see the lights from the town across the way and the neat part is the star trails in the sky!

This one was also a 16 minute exposure. I put a duotone layer over the original shot to make it look more like night.

This one was a 14 minute exposure and you can totally see how much light you can get from the moon...looks just like day huh? If it weren't for the star trails in the sky you wouldn't know it was taken at 3 am!

That's what I have so far! Stay tuned for some painting with light, and star trails! I am having so much fun!

Sandra's Family...

A lovely lady by the name of Sandra booked me to do a bunch of family photos for her immediate and extended family. It was Sandra's parents, all their children and their families. It was totally insane and some of the best fun I have had in a long time! Every family group wore a different color shirt and jeans. We had a Light Blue group, a Dark Blue group, a Green group, a Yellow group, and a Pink group. It made things really easy for me..."All right green team! You're up!" Sandra you have one awesome family!

Infrared Photography

This assignment was really cool! My good friend Wendhy was kind enough to share her Nikon with me so that we could both complete the project. The basic idea is to imitate Infrared Film results in which anything green in a photograph will look white and anything blue will appear dark. It looks amazing and you can have a camera converted to do Infrared (there is a hefty fee of course).

Now most camera's are designed to not let in any Infrared light at all so you would have to use a camera that had been converted to achieve this. However, Nikon's design allows for a narrow spectrum of Infrared to be detected if you use an Infrared filter on the lens. The Infrared filter is a DARK red filter. Wendhy found and purchased one and off we went to Floyd Lamb Park to give it a go. You can't see through the filter at all and so we would have to focus the camera, then put the filter on, set the camera to bulb and, just like with night photography, have a long exposure (you need a tripod for this cause there is no human way to hold a camera steady for more than a split second!). Our exposures were between 10 and 20 seconds.

Here are some of our results! I think they were awesome! This first one is what the original shot looked like BEFORE we desaturated it. Even it looks cool!

High Key/Low Key Lighting

Examples of High Key lighting. Designed to flatter and works best on children and women. Very few shadows and very even lighting.

Low Key lighting is much darker and designed to bring out texture and isolate certain qualities. It is best used on men and to create a visually interesting shot. The example below is called Rembrandt lighting. One side of the face is lit well and the other is cast in shadow with the exception of a small area of light below the eye. I didn't have as much time to work on this one and so I only have one really good shot. Thanks mom for posing for me!

So I almost forgot about this assignment and ended up taking the shots the day before they were due! I know so bad! It won't happen again! lol. My teacher gave us a list of composition elements to pick from and then had to submit seven for a grade. We had to use the same object or person in all the photos. The point of this assignment was to illustrate the effect photographing the same subject using different white balance settings under different lighting conditions. We had three different white balance settings to use: Daylight, Tungsten, and Flouresent. There are of course many more settings than that but they are the three most common lighting conditions. You should be able to see the difference of photographing in the right and wrong lighting situtations.

I didn't exect the flourescent light shots to come out correct. They hardly ever do since flourecsent lights are what all my teachers call an "unnatural" light source and is really hard to photograph in well.

We had to shoot one of each and then all three together and make sure that the lighting ratios were perfect using two different light metering techniques. It was insane but I learned a lot.
